Fred Stewart has had a long and diverse career as a company executive for numerous businesses in New Zealand and overseas, varying in size and product lines.
Not content with a successful career in business Fred has always been keen to share his knowledge and success story with others. He is widely known as the “Business Doctor” because of his knack of guiding even the sickliest enterprise back to competitive health and fitness.
‘The Rudiments of Business’ is the second edition of Fred’s ‘Survive in Business with Business Wise’. I first read the earlier volume about four years ago. At once, the practicality of what Fred is writing impressed me very much.
Starting a business on one’s own is a lonely task. Nine of every ten new businesses are reputed to fail within the first 5 years. It is hardly surprising. If you are in business for the first time how do you know the strategies adopted will succeed? How can you tell what will work and what has been tried before and failed. When everything is going wrong, it is so easy to throw in the towel and walk away.
Many people shrink back into their shell at the thought of trying. We all know people who find it more comfortable to sit in an office pushing paper for a regular salary and cannot break out of the comfort zone and do what they really would like to do.
Fred’s straightforward, down-to-earth use of real stories and practical examples has the advantage of offering practical advice for the price of the time it takes to read his book. Those who finish the volume will have renewed confidence to give it a go. It will arm them with many useful strategies to avoid the worst hurdles that fierce competition can throw in front of the unwary.
Fred’s efforts aim at increasing the rate of success and cutting the rate of failure. Achieving this goal will make a strong positive contribution to strengthening the country’s economy. It will cut down the waste of effort, loss of capital and broken spirits. It will build capacity and confidence in those who succeed.
If businesses survive the perilous initial five years they are far more likely to make a long term positive contribution to the development of the country, of the people involved and to the satisfaction and contentment of customers.
I congratulate Fred on his ongoing project to improve the health of the nation’s businesses, to nurture the young and to strengthen the mature.

Fred Stewart brings a pragmatic mind set developed through years of practical experience to his subject. His book is a very useful addition to the contemporary business library as the anecdotes from past experience bring the subject to life and make the content more relevant and accessible. The plain language and clear structure of chapters also make it highly suitable as an introductory business text.
